PPH Awareness Month Launch

Did you know?

36% of institutional maternal deaths in Uganda (FY 2023/2024) were caused by excessive bleeding after childbirth.

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) remains the leading cause of maternal mortality in Uganda globally, yet it is preventable.

In partnership with the Uganda Ministry of Health (MoH) and Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, BAMA is taking bold action to tackle this crisis. We recently convened district leaders, health workers, and stakeholders to:

  • Share findings from Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC), Essential Training in Operative Obstetrics, and Safe Obstetric Anesthesia mentorship programs.

  • Launch the annual Postpartum Hemorrhage Awareness Campaign for the Masaka region. This year, Masaka region, where BAMA operates, has been selected by the MoH to host the climax event for the national PPH Awareness Month under the theme: “Ending Maternal Deaths Due to Excessive Bleeding: Our Collective Responsibility.”

  • Drive transformative leadership and governance decisions to strengthen maternal healthcare.

Through this evidence-driven approach, we’re equipping leaders with the data and tools needed to address systemic gaps that drive preventable maternal mortality, including critical shortages of doctors, midwives, and anesthetic officers, while fostering shared accountability for sustainable improvements.

Key highlights from the meeting included:

  • Districts committing to fast-track recruitment of skilled health workers.

  • MoH pledging critical equipment and supplies to Health Center IVs.

  • Resident district commissioners committing radio airtime to sensitise the masses about the birth.

  • Districts committing to conduct continuous medical education sessions and leading emergency preparedness and complication readiness drills for PPH this August.

The event was graced by:

  • Dr. Richard Mugahi, Commissioner, MoH

  • Dr. Mary Nyantaro, Deputy Director, Masaka Regional Referral Hospital

  • Resident District Commissioners, Local Council V Chairpersons, Chief Administrative Officers

  • Health workers

  • Implementing partners.

Together, we are transforming evidence into action because no mother should lose her life while bringing new life into the world.
